Unlock and complete a step
What to do on each step to reveal the next one.
Before you start
- You need to be connected to an experience. See Connect to an experience with a code.
How it works
You see one step at a time. The current step shows its name, a description, and sometimes a photo, a hint, or a map link. When you complete it, the next step opens. When you finish the last one, you reach your memory wall.
You can't peek ahead — the next step stays hidden (photo and all) until you finish the one you're on.
The four kinds of steps
What you do to move on depends on the step. There are four kinds.
Just be there
Some steps only ask you to confirm you've arrived or done the thing.
- What you do: Read the step, then tap the I'm here button. The next step opens.
Enter a code
Some steps ask for a code — a word or number the experience-maker chose. There'll usually be a clue (on a sign, a date, an inside joke) or a hint to help you work it out.
- What you do: Type the code in the box labeled Enter the code, then tap Complete step.
- Capitalization doesn't matter — “SUNDAY” and “sunday” both work.
- If it's wrong, you'll see “The code does not match.” Check the clue and try again. Stuck? Tap + SHOW HINT if the step has a hint.
Write a response
Some steps ask you to write something — a memory, an answer, a few words. Whatever you write is saved and shows up on your memory wall at the end.
- What you do: Type your reply in the box labeled Your reply, then tap Complete step.
- There's no right answer. Any text counts.
- If you leave it blank you'll see “You must leave a response to continue.” Add a few words and try again.
Timed unlock
Some steps are set to open at a specific time. Until then, there's nothing to do.
- What you see: A quiet screen that says “This step unlocks at” with the time, and the line “HOLD TIGHT — WE'LL BUZZ YOU.”
- What you do: Nothing — just wait. When the time arrives, the step opens on its own and you can continue. You can't rush it.
Using a hint
If a step has a hint, you'll see a small + SHOW HINT button. Tap it to reveal the hint; tap again to hide it. Hints never pop up on their own, so they're there only if you want them.
Following a location
If a step has a place attached, you'll see a tappable address. Tap it to open directions in your maps app.
Tips
- Take your time. The experience waits for you — nothing expires while you're partway through a step.
- Read the whole step before acting. The clue you need for a code is often right there in the description.
- Your finished steps are kept. As you go, completed steps build into the memory wall you'll see at the end.
If something goes wrong
- “The code does not match” → What you typed doesn't match the code that was set. Capitalization is ignored, but an extra space or a different word won't match. Re-read the clue, reveal the hint if there is one, and try again.
- “You must leave a response to continue” → This step needs you to write something. Add a few words, then tap Complete step.
- A timed step won't open → It's waiting for its set time. There's nothing to tap — it opens by itself when the time comes.
- The screen says you're offline → You lost connection. Your current step is saved. Reconnect and keep going where you left off.
